March 1st, 1862 $1 The Western & Atlantic Rail Road note from Atlanta, Georgia.
The Western & Atlantic Rail Road was the scene of the Great Locomotive Chase in April 1862. Volunteers from the Union Army cut Confederate telegraph wires, preventing communications, then commandeered a train and took it northward toward Chattanooga, TN, doing as much damage to the vital Western & Atlantic Rail Road line as they went. They were pursued by Confederate soldiers on foot at first, then later by a succession of locomotives for 87 miles.
Printed with both black and red ink, this note features a train Vignette at the top!
This note grades Very Fine with punch cancellations and a stain on the bottom. It measures ~ 6" x 2.75".
