1872 $1 The Deposit Savings Association of Mobile, ALABAMA Note

$139.00

1872 $1 The Deposit Savings Association of Mobile, Certificate of Deposit from Mobile, Alabama.

After the American Civil War, many railroads and banks issued items such as "Fare Tickets" and "Certificates of Deposit" to skirt the Federal Laws prohibiting the issuance of private currency. After seeing the circulation some of these notes went through, they undoubtedly circulated as Currency.

This piece from the American Bank Note Company features a Vignette of a mule-drawn cart being loaded with sugar cane. On the right is a Vignette of Ceres standing by a beehive, representing Industry. "1" dies and "ONE" protectors are printed in green! The reverse also sports an intricate green design.

This note grades Fine with some pinholes.
