Young Hyson is a type of high quality green tea that was popular in England and the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries. 15 chests of Young Hyson were actually thrown overboard in the Boston Tea Party. Hyson was also the first tea ordered by George Washington after he became president.
John Ward is listed in the 1868 directory as a Tea Dealer at the address printed on the note.
He was in business as late as 1900 when he was listed as a Tea Broker at the age of 70.
This note grades About Uncirculated+ with a light residue spot on the reverse and a tiny tear on the bottom edge.
