1830's $1 The Mount Hecla Steam Cotton Mills scrip from Greensboro, North Carolina.
It is believed that an early effort was made to establish the mill in 1818-1822. A reorganized and enlarged effort took place in 1828-1830 and the steam-powered operation (the first in North Carolina) began in 1833.
The mill, owned by Henry Humphreys, was located on the northwest corner of Bellemeade and Battleground (now known as North Greene Street) and produced cotton yarn.
Production the first year was 528 spindles. Production eventually increased to 2500 spindles.
In 1848 the mill moved to Gaston County and became the Mountain Island Manufacturing Co. Operations commenced the following year.
This note grades Very Fine.
It measures ~ 6.75" x 3".
