Henry Humphries was a merchant located at the corner of South Elm and West Market streets.
He also had a five-story steam-powered cotton factory that was located on Greene Street that produced cotton and sheeting and was the first of its type in North Carolina.
Humphries had 75 looms in production by 1833 and his goods were sold in north Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
